India Requests Evidence from Canada on Nijjar Killing Allegation: Investigation Not Ruled Out

In a recent development, India has formally requested Canada to provide evidence substantiating allegations of Indian agents’ involvement in the killing of terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on June 18 in British Columbia. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has stated that India remains open to an investigation into the matter, highlighting the need for responsible sharing of information.

During a conversation with a journalist, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized that the request for evidence is grounded in the context of concerns regarding the accommodation of individuals espousing violent and extreme political opinions in Canadian politics. These opinions often advocate separatism from India through violent means.

Jaishankar shed light on the challenging diplomatic circumstances, citing instances where Indian diplomats, including the High Commissioner, faced attacks and intimidation in Canada. He underscored the importance of freedom of speech and expression, emphasizing that these freedoms come with a responsibility that should not be misused for political purposes.

Addressing the lack of evidence shared by Canada to support its allegations, Jaishankar stated, “If you have a reason to make such an allegation, please share the evidence with us. We are not ruling out an investigation and are willing to consider any information they may have, but they haven’t done so.”

The strained relations between India and Canada arose after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made allegations in September about the potential involvement of Indian agents in Nijjar’s killing. India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020. The Indian government dismissed Trudeau’s claims as “absurd” and “motivated,” leading to the temporary suspension of visa issuance to Canadian citizens and a request for Ottawa to downsize its diplomatic presence.

As the dialogue between the two nations continues, India’s stance reflects a commitment to a thorough and objective examination of the situation, with the expectation that any serious allegations should be supported by credible evidence.
