Virat Kohli Surpasses Sachin Tendulkar’s 25-Year Century Record in World Cup 2023 Semi-Final

In a historic turn of events on Wednesday, November 15, Virat Kohli emerged as the new leading century-maker in ODIs, toppling Sachin Tendulkar’s 25-year reign. The 35-year-old cricket maestro achieved this milestone by notching up his 50th ODI hundred during the 2023 World Cup semi-final clash against New Zealand at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium.

This significant shift in cricket history harks back to September 26, 1998, when Tendulkar, often hailed as the Master Blaster, secured his 18th ODI century against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. His unbeaten 127 off 130 balls led India to a resounding victory by eight wickets, chasing down a target of 214 in 42.2 overs. With that century, Tendulkar overtook West Indies legend Desmond Haynes, who previously held the record with 17 ODI centuries.

Tendulkar’s record-setting innings kept him at the helm for an impressive 9181 days before Kohli stepped into the limelight on Wednesday. Kohli had previously equaled Tendulkar’s century tally during the India vs. South Africa clash at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Facing New Zealand in the semi-final showdown, Kohli showcased his prowess by scoring 117 runs off 113 balls, adorned with nine fours and two sixes. Reflecting on their first meeting in the Indian dressing room 15 years ago, Tendulkar shared a light-hearted memory of Kohli being pranked into touching his feet by teammates. He praised Kohli’s growth as a player and expressed joy that an Indian cricketer had broken his record.

“The first time I met you in the Indian dressing room, you were pranked by other teammates into touching my feet. I couldn’t stop laughing that day. But soon, you touched my heart with your passion and skill. I am so happy that that young boy has grown into a ‘Virat’ player,” Tendulkar wrote on Instagram.

“I couldn’t be happier that an Indian broke my record. And to do it on the biggest stage — in the World Cup Semi-Final — and at my home ground is the icing on the cake,” he added
